		<description>Rodolfo Machado
Cincinati, Ohio
Public Art Installation
Commissioned by The University of Cincinnati
Stainless Steel, Wood, Light, Concrete
1998.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/1619129/sigma-defense.jpg" border="0" width="220" height="364" width_o="220" height_o="364" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/1619129/sigma-defense_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; From the artist, Machado: To this end, employing a design technique of totemic origins, the design stacks varied elements that legibly symbolize the university and the fraternity. Firmly set on its cast in situ concrete base, the tower forms the university’s monogram, representing the institution’s foundational role. Above, a shaft of dark wood, polished metal, and precast concrete convey the fraternity’s symbols, the hammer and the Greek letters -- or labor and the culture of Occident. On top, a lantern of perforated stainless steel construction stands for enlightenment and knowledge, the ultimate goal of the school and its people. While the legibility of these symbols by those who belong to this community is important, the arcane opacity the tower produces in those who do not know or belong is equally important to us. We would like to believe that the effect the tower produces in others outside -- this enigmatic, strange perhaps even more seductive effect, the shear result of form and materials and light longing to attain beauty -- is equally memorable.

Zahner was involved in various metal components, and the stainless steel perforated "flame" at the sculpture's top. Below are some images from the architect:

		<description>Linsday Stouffer
St. Louis, Missouri.
Public Art Installation
Commissioned by MetroArts
Stainless Steel
2006.

The piece, one of nine commissioned for the St. Louis railway extension, consists of large metal screens facing one another across the stations long curving entry ramps. Perforations in the screens create an optical illusion known as the moire effect, and appear to shimmer as viewers descend into the amphitheater-like space.

Zahner was selected to produce this public art for the artist. The artist's plans were translated to constructible schematics through the Design Assist Group, a dedicated team of engineers who performed the design-assist phase of the project. The project was fabricated and installed by Zahner craftsmen.

Lindsey Stouffer is a sculptor with extensive design and metal fabrication experience. She currently teaches in the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Meaning is communicated through materiality, form, and light in these sculptures made from steel and hosiery.

<description>This sculpture was initially intended to be installed in Stowe Botanical Gardens, North Carolina. The 75 foot tall sculpture was never constructed due to restrictive funds, but the project went through the entire design assist phase, including scale models and wind-testing. The project is archived and ready to produce should the funding become available.

Below are a few images and a video showing some of the process for the project. A to scale functional model was sent to a wind tunnel where the wind loads were tested for both breeze and tornado velocity.

<description>Model of the upcoming Zahner Campus
Crawford Architects
Aluminum, Glass
38' high
Scheduled Completion: June, 2010.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/335835/small.jpg" border="0" width="150" height="207" width_o="150" height_o="207" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/335835/small_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; Zahner has completed construction of a new state of the art, ZEPP assembly building at their Kansas City Campus. Crawford Architects' Stacey Jones worked with Zahner engineers and designers to develop an avant garde billowing curtain wall, a facade of glass and aluminum. The undulating surface was derived using an algorithm which determined the subtle texture of wind-blown sand. This new face of Zahner marks a transition for the neighborhood from the industrial corrugated steel and brick buildings that surround it into an architectural wonder much like the artwork and architecture that Zahner produces all-year-round. The expansion integrates Zahner's own ZEPPS™ Process at their Kansas City Campus. The facility walls are created from fins and glass.

The ceiling height of the addition is 16 feet higher than the rest of the plant, which will vastly improve the creation of large scale ZEPP panel assemblies. The Zahner Plant operates 24-hours a day, so look forward to brilliant views of craftsmen handling 40' GB-60™ Stainless Panels at four o'clock in the morning.

Kansas City, Missouri
New Municipal Vehicle Impound Tow Lot Facility
Powder-coated aluminum, galvanized steel
2008.

Seven Sentinels is crafted of standard automatic parking gates modified into seven, 16-foot-tall sculptures -- fabricated locally at A. Zahner Company. The sculptures stand equidistant inside the traffic island separating incoming and outgoing traffic at the facility’s entry. The gates raise as cars leave the facility, presenting a synchronized display like sports fans doing the Wave or soldiers presenting a military sword tribute.

We produce work by veterans and relative newcomers alike. We ensure that your project succeeds, and that you do, too.

Hands of the Artist™ was initiated to showcase projects where artists have chosen to enlist our expertise to assist the creation of their artwork. We construct projects of every shape, size, and budget. We specialize in ideas, we specialize in metals, and we specialize in the advancement of artist's careers. Zahner® has assisted hundreds of art &#38; design projects through the entire process:

When budgeting gets tough, many artists offer to forego their fee before looking at all their options. We know the options, and we're here to protect your interests as well as our own. We'll help you budget your project for those inevitable adjustments.Artwork of this scale has a production and installation date. Zahner® will assist in developing a plan for all parties that is clear and concise. Our mutually agreed schedule will incorporate milestones to help guide completion deadlines and structure flexibility into the plan for the artistic process.Zahner provides full engineering services. We understand the necessity to make the structure perform without interference or intrusion to the finished appearance of the artwork. And when the occasion arrises where an engineering certificate is required, we have the resources in house. Zahner produces accurate and highly precise work by defining your project digitally in a three dimensional model. We can create this model from drawings and specifications, or we can simply scan your scale model. Our digital model goes beyond a simple guide for the fabrication and installation of your work. It also provides you and your client the ability to view your project from any angle, apply different finishes, and predict the many environmental effects such as sunlight cast upon the artwork.Zahner has two fully equipped plants: One in Kansas City, Missouri; one in Dallas, Texas. Our people work with artists and understand the nuances of creating good work. When you choose Zahner, you also choose your level of involvement. The artist is always welcome and is encouraged to visit and be involved with us in the creation of the art piece. We are known for our care, concern, and execution of good design.Zahner® produces accurate and highly precise work by defining your project digitally in a three dimensional model. Our workshop has its own packaging facility where we use acid free protective films and coatings with our professional equipment to maneuver difficult forms. When we get it there, the same people that packed the artwork oversee the unpacking and installation of your art. We take excellent care to safely place your art to your specifications, and should anything go wrong, it's our liability on the line, not yours.Zahner® field operators have years of experience in the installation of complex forms. They take an approach that is sensitive to the location, ensuring that the piece is installed accurately, and safely.

About Zahner®Founded in the late 1800's, we primarily engineer and fabricate innovative metal applications for the art and architectural communities. We produce many of the highest profile projects by the biggest architects of the century, including Herzog &#38; de Meuron, Frank Gehry, Morphosis, and Tadao Ando. Now we're doing the same for artists and designers.
