Zahner design engineered a unique system for simple, efficient, and permanent installation that met the Gensler's concerns. Gensler's design worked on two levels. “When you approach it from a distance, it appears as a wall, reflecting the unity of the police force,” explained David Herjeczki of Gensler. “As you get closer, it becomes an assemblage of individual pieces, each one paying tribute to a fallen officer. When contemplating an appropriate material for the memorial, [we] focused on the object most sacred to the LAPD: the brass badge.”

		<description>Professor Kevin Klinger's Design Studio Collaborative
Muncie, Indiana
Weathering Steel
2006;

Students of Professor Kevin Klinger's design studio had weathering steel perforated, shaped and formed to create a sculpture for the campus.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/103741/MCC-installation-(10).jpg" width="640" height="232" width_o="640" height_o="232" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/103741/MCC-installation-(10)_o.jpg" data-mid="443773"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/103741/Ball_State_640.jpg" width="640" height="266" width_o="700" height_o="291" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/103741/Ball_State_o.jpg" data-mid="977411"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

These two photographs were taken months apart. You can see how the steel had just begun to oxidize in the top photograph, and how in the next photograph, the steel has weathered to its final state.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/103741/MCC-installation-(18).jpg" width="640" height="249" width_o="640" height_o="249" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9776/103741/MCC-installation-(18)_o.jpg" data-mid="443774"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Weathering steel is better known by its brand name, Cor-Ten. Unlike other ferric metals, weathering steel will not rust through. When weathering steel oxidizes (rusts) the layer of rust becomes a barrier to prevent further oxidation. It builds up a layer of rust, and then ceases to rust anymore. Many outdoor public sculptures are made from this material, including much of Richard Serra's giant steel sculptures which could last thousands of years, perhaps indefinitely.

Kansas City, Missouri
aluminum, black mirror-finish stainless

"I wanted to create a piece that people could experience in a tangible way. I aimed to create a work that would transform viewers into participants; encouraging them to take part in the appearance and organization of the piece. With large scale sculpture it so often seems that the viewer is an after thought. I wanted to make the viewer a collaborator, one who actively decides the arrangement and thus completes the design. I feel that by making an interactive artwork I can connect the participants to the work in a way that moves beyond visual and intellectual appreciation into actual collaboration and participation, engaging people both aesthetically and tactilely."
